Programme notes:
Water is not just a necessity for our survival; it is also a medium for people to enjoy themselves, to have fun. From children to the elderly, people of all ages have come up with a myriad of ways to play with water: splashing water at each other, playing with water guns, enjoying a hot spring...the list goes on. Water festivals are also celebrated by different countries around the world.
Meanwhile, water also brings people serenity and relaxation; that is why many people like to visit rivers and streams, where they are able to attain a sense of peace and calmness in their minds just by watching and listening to the sound of water steadily flowing across the path.
Written for a clarinet quartet, this piece seeks to capture both the playfulness and gentleness that water can bring to human lives by adopting a fast-slow-fast structure. Bouncy rhythms in the fast section and lyrical melodic lines in the slow section combine to make this piece an enjoyable work to play and listen to.
